This is for land for the data centers, power, the buildings themselves, the hardware, the chips, networking gear. You have to lay all that out in advance. Some of it is about six months in advance and a bunch of it is two years in advance.\"\n\n![AWS Trainium 3 Annapurna Labs chip with engraved specifications. ](https://assets.aboutamazon.com/dims4/default/f974f3c/2147483647/strip/true/crop/1688x1125+156+0/resize/300x200!/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fassets.aboutamazon.com%2F42%2F40%2F2097c8104a08be1d4b0bb39b202d%2Fabout-amazon-hero-aws-trainium-3.jpg)\n\n- [CPUs, GPUs, and accelerators: The chips powering AI](https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/aws/aws-trainium-graviton-ai-chips-explained)\n\nHe said the payoff comes over time.\n\n\"These assets are many-year useful-life assets. On the networking and the hardware side, it's about six years. On the data center side, it's 30-plus-year useful-life assets,\" he said. \"And so you get to monetize those assets over a long period of time so that when your revenue growth starts to catch up with the capital expenditure growth, you actually end up really liking the operating margin and the free cash flow and the ROIC.\"\n\nJassy said Amazon has been through this before in the first wave of AWS, “where we had the same type of curve where we were spending so much CapEx in the short term, and then we all really liked the free cash flow and the ROIC a few years later.\n\n\"And I think the same story is going to play out, except with just much larger revenue and free cash flow downstream,\" Jassy said.\n\nNext, learn about [the rapid growth of Amazon’s chips business](https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/company-news/amazon-ceo-andy-jassy-amazon-chips-business-q1-2026-earnings).","publisher":{"@type":"Organization","name":"About Amazon","url":"https://www.aboutamazon.com","sameAs":["https://x.com/amazonnews","https://www.linkedin.com/company/amazon","https://www.instagram.com/amazonnews"],"logo":{"@type":"ImageObject","url":"https://assets.aboutamazon.com/bd/8f/88e7b0314cc2bd05b9de3155a0fe/amazon-news.svg"},"parentOrganization":{"@type":"Organization","name":"Amazon","url":"https://www.amazon.com","sameAs":["https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3884","https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_(company)","https://x.com/Amazon"]}}}
