America's Test Kitchen Kids: How to make s'mores-style rice cereal treats

Molly Birnbaum, the editor-in-chief of America’s Test Kitchen Kids, has a kid-tested and kid-approved snack that thousands of kids just like you have already made at home: s’mores rice cereal treats. Molly and her 3-year-old daughter, Olive, show us how to prep the ingredients, gather the equipment you’ll use, and whip up this yummy dessert in just over an hour.

In this video, you’ll see that what puts this recipe over the top is the addition of chocolate chips and broken-up graham crackers. Chefs-in-training will be able to complete nearly all of the steps, with the exception of grabbing the bowl out of the microwave (too hot!) and cutting the treats into squares using a knife (too sharp!). Otherwise, all of the ingredient-adding, stirring, pouring, and smooshing can be done by even the smallest of hands.

We have to tell you, though, there’s one really, really hard part to this recipe. Know what it is? It’s having to wait one whole hour for the finished dish to harden! Think you’re up for the challenge? As Molly and Olive discover, the final, hardened treats are (more than) well worth the wait. Time to dig in!
