Considering consumer electronics

Our goal has been not to build gadgets, but to build devices that are deeply integrated with services and together bring delightful moments front and center...so the devices themselves fade into the background.

The key to this vision for devices and services is ambient intelligence: an environment where each of your devices and services is a thread in a fabric woven together by artificial intelligence, offering far more than any one single device or service could on its own.

Share

Ambient Intelligence

Adopting ambient intelligence is a big shift in the way customers relate to technology, and that means we need to be sure we're building that technology in the right way―with privacy and sustainability top-of-mind.

Privacy is foundational to everything we do

Privacy is a huge opportunity for invention. From adding new ways to ask Alexa about your privacy settings, to providing more granular information about your household’s voice history, we are continuing to give customers greater transparency and control over their data.

Soon, customers in the U.S. with the 4th-generation Echo and EchoShow 10—which use our AZ1 Neural Edge processor, can choose to have the audio of their Alexa voice requests processed directly on device and not sent to the cloud. With this setting, customers’ voice recordings are also automatically deleted after the on-device processing.

Share

Sustainability

Last year, we announced a number of sustainability efforts we were taking as part of our commitment to The Climate Pledge.

We started with Echo, and now we are making investments in new wind and solar energy that, by 2025, will be equal to the energy use of all Fire TV and Ring devices worldwide.

Sustainability

Together, these energy investments, the expansion of Low Power Mode to more devices, and the use of more recycled materials mean that we are on track to cut the carbon intensity, defined as the average lifecycle carbon emissions per device unit, of Amazon Devices in half by 2025.

A lifestyle image with an Echo Device, notebook, and plant, text says "Average carbon emissions per device cut by 50% by 2025."

Just announced—Amazon Smart Thermostat

A smart, affordable Energy Star-certified thermostat that works with Alexa and gives customers a simple way to keep their home comfortable and energy efficient. We worked with the experts at Resideo, who make Honeywell Home thermostats, to bring their 130 years of experience to this product, allowing it to work reliably with most existing 24V HVAC systems.

Amazon Smart Thermostat will be $59.99. After applying utility-provider rebates, eligible customers can get Amazon Smart Thermostat for $10, and sometimes, for nothing at all.

Just announced - Echo Show 15

The new digital heart of your home, bringing all of the things that make your household tick into one place. It can be wall-mounted or placed on a stand, in portrait or landscape mode―whatever works best for your space.

The device’s large, 15.6” screen makes it possible to quickly see all of the information that is most important to you and your family.

Brand-new interface

Alexa widgets make it easy to customize your display with up-to-date information, such as:

  • Shared Calendar: Add events and the whole family can see them in one aggregated view.
  • Sticky Notes: Ask Alexa to leave a note of encouragement, or tell your family when you’ll be home for dinner.
  • Smart Home Favorites: View and control your favorite smart home devices in one place.
  • Picture-in-Picture: View live camera feeds while listening to music, following a recipe, or doing other things on Echo Show 15.

More ways to use Echo Show 15

With its large screen and support for 1080p video streaming, Echo Show 15 can also double as your kitchen TV so you can easily catch up on the news, or watch your favorite shows and movies from Prime Video, Netflix, and more.

Starting later this year, we’re also adding support for SLING TV on all existing Echo Show devices, giving you even more access to the content you love, on the devices you already own.

You can also ask Alexa to show the Photo Frame, which will display your favorite family pictures or pre-loaded art—making it look like it’s part of your decor.

Just announced—AZ2

Echo Show 15 is powered by the next-generation Amazon AZ2 Neural Edge processor. AZ2 is a quad-core scalable architecture capable of 22x more TOPS (trillions of operations per second) than the previous generation. Like AZ1, it’s capable of processing speech recognition on device and can also process computer vision (CV) workloads in parallel.

This powerful processor enables Echo Show 15 to be able to recognize a person enrolled in a new feature: visual ID.

Amazon Devices and Services

Just announced—visual ID

With visual ID, Alexa can now recognize you when you’re Echo Show camera’s field of view. Once Alexa recognizes you, the ambient display will show content that’s personalized for you—your personal calendar, your recently played music, or notes for you.

We built visual ID with privacy at its foundation. It’s optional—you have to enroll to use the feature. All image processing happens on-device, and you can delete your visual ID profile at any time.

Just announced—custom sounds

Next year, customers can teach Alexa to recognize custom sounds in their home. Take an open refrigerator―if you teach Alexa to learn the beeping sound that your fridge makes when it’s left open, you can have Alexa send you a notification to close the door so your food doesn’t go bad.

Meaningful connections

Staying connected to our loved ones, especially those that are remote, is tough. The last year and a half has certainly been no exception. That’s why we’re focused on building technology that puts these meaningful connections front and center.

Share

Just announced—Amazon Glow

Amazon Glow reimagines the way kids can connect with remote family and friends. Our goal here was simple: create a device that goes beyond just enabling a video call—and do it with kids top of mind. And that’s exactly what we’ve done. Glow offers an immersive, virtual experience that brings the digital and physical worlds together.

Amazon Glow features

Glow combines video calling with connected activities to keep everyone engaged and visible, making virtual visits feel more like being together in person.

While kids are having fun with Amazon Glow’s 19" touch-sensitive projected area, remote family and friends can use their own tablet to interact in a shared virtual space in real time through the free Amazon Glow app. And the 8” LCD display is designed so that kids can see their loved one the whole time.

Things to try

Glow unlocks features like the merging of physical and digital objects. You can see this come to life with a twist on the classic activity Tangram. Kids use physical shapes, while their remote family members use digital ones, to solve challenges together.

Glow also has object scanning, which kids can use to turn a favorite toy into a digital sticker for art activities, or—my daughter’s personal favorite—into a custom jigsaw puzzle.

Glow includes hundreds of hours of hands-on, interactive activities, thanks to Amazon Kids+. Glow comes with a 1-year subscription to Kids+, bringing thousands of books, and dozens of interactive games and art activities, to kids and their remote loved ones.

Collaborating with leaders in kids content

And to create even more exciting content for Glow, we collaborated with four leaders in kids content: Disney, Mattel, Nickelodeon, and Sesame Workshop.

Even more interactive content for Amazon Glow is coming later this year, to delight kids and families. We plan on opening our SDK to a limited set of partners in the first half of 2022.

Parental controls and privacy

From the very beginning of our journey with Glow, we knew it was important to design it with parental controls and privacy at the foundation. Kids can only call contacts their grown-ups preselect. And, closing the visible privacy shutter on the device instantly disables cameras and microphones.

One last device that delivers peace of mind and a whole lot more

In five to 10 years, we believe every home will have at least one robot. They’ll become a core part of your everyday life.

You’ve already seen some of our early work in this area. Last year, in addition to Always Home Cam, we introduced Echo Show 10, a device that can rotate its display to move with you around the room. And, we found that just a little bit of movement makes the experience even more magical for customers.

Home monitoring

With live view and the app, you can send Astro to check on specific rooms, things, people, and even pets.

With the periscope cam, you can expand the field of view. Technically, building this periscope was incredibly hard, but it’s so helpful if you’re away from home and want to view things a little higher up—like checking if you left the stove on.

Amazon Devices and Services

Share

Home monitoring

When you combine Astro with Ring Protect Pro, you get so much more. Now, when you’re away, you can use it to proactively patrol your home, investigate activity, and send you notifications when it detects something unusual—all the while, you have the option to save these videos to your Ring account.

Share

In-home care

Dave talks about how Astro can be helpful for aging loved ones in your life when paired with Alexa Together. Dave's 85-year-old father lives 1,500 miles away.

"I’ve started visualizing who in my life could really benefit from it. If I could give him a device that helps him live independently, and gives me peace of mind—that’s truly priceless. Now, I can call my dad, and it will go find him to deliver the call. Or, my dad can set up a Routine that sends me a message when he’s up and about. And, with Alexa Together, if anything goes wrong, I know he can call a specialist 24/7.

Share

A unique persona

We learned early on that customers don’t just want Alexa on wheels. To that end, we embodied Astro with a unique persona that’s all its own. From adding eyes to the display, to a whole host of sounds, the device really comes alive.

Astro will bring all of your favorite Alexa features like music, news, podcasts, and timers directly to you. Or, if you’re doing a video call, Astro will move with you around the house, so that you can continue the conversation.

Share

Privacy

Of course, with a new device like this, we had to think about privacy at every turn. In addition to many of the privacy features customers are used to with Echo devices, we built brand new features:

  • Set out-of-bounds zones to denote areas where you don’t want Astro to go.
  • Turn on “do not disturb” to minimize how much Astro moves during certain times of the day or night.
  • We've also embedded AI processors inside of Astro to allow for as much edge computing as possible.

The science behind Astro

Share

Hard science

Floorplans vary, furniture comes in different shapes and sizes, pets move around, and people are constantly setting down sneakers and bags that can block Astro’s path. Unlike roads, your house doesn’t have lines or maps that help with navigation.

The team had to solve for all of that, inventing an entirely new technology construct, one that integrates autonomous movement, home mapping, visual understanding, and more. We had to leverage AI in so many new ways, including using deep neural learning to map anchor points in the home, and building dynamic new SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping) algorithms that are constantly refreshing.

Day 1 Editions

Astro is part of our Day 1 Editions program, which is designed to bring our most ambitious ideas to life.

Like Alexa, which has continued to get smarter since we launched seven years ago, Astro too will get smarter and more capable over time.

Astro will be available for an introductory price of $999. Starting today, you can sign up to request an invite. We plan to start granting invitations and shipping the device a little later this year.

Wrap up

We’ve shown you a lot today. Products designed to reduce your environmental impact. A reimagined home hub. Devices that will bring families closer together. Products and services that help people on their health and wellness journeys. New security devices from Ring and Blink to make neighborhoods safer. And, of course, Astro. All the while, showing you that we can make AI simple enough for everybody, and move more and more computing to the edge.

The reason we do this is simple: because it matters to customers. And, because we believe that, when we’re at our best, our products can solve the hard problems behind the scenes, so customers can spend their time focusing on what matters most to them.
