This includes driving improvements in the sustainability of packaging across Amazon’s supply chain, starting with our own products and operations and partnering with manufacturers worldwide to invent packaging that delights customers, eliminates waste, and ensures products arrive intact and undamaged. Millions of times each year, customers write to tell us they love how their products have been packaged – sending pictures and stories that our packaging and fulfillment center teams love to hear. They also tell us when our packaging hasn't worked—when their products were damaged, when the box used was too big, or just too hard to open. This informs our worldwide packaging team and allows Amazon and our vendors to improve packaging design and delivery. If it's serious enough, their feedback can automatically pull what we call "the Andon cord" to prevent a product from disappointing another customer.

We continue to pursue multi-year waste reduction initiatives like Frustration-Free Packaging to promote easy-to-open, 100% recyclable packaging that is ready to ship to customers without additional packaging. Frustration-Free Packaging also eliminates hard plastic “clamshell” cases and the plastic-coated wire ties commonly used in toy packaging. Over the past 10 years, our sustainable packaging initiatives have eliminated more than 244,000 tons of packaging materials, avoiding 500 million shipping boxes. Our programs have reduced packaging waste by 16%, avoiding 305 million shipping boxes in 2017 alone.
