Amazon Prime Air, a future delivery system that will get packages to customers in 30 minutes or less using small drones, is one invention we are incredibly passionate about. We are committed to making Prime Air available to customers worldwide as soon as we are permitted to do so.
As we develop this exciting new technology, we support the pragmatic, flexible, risk-based approach to drone regulation that has been pursued by European authorities, in particular EASA (the European Aviation Safety Agency). We also support efforts to harmonize international regulations: Just as the European Commission’s vision for a unified Digital Single Market would enhance our customers’ experience anywhere in Europe, the harmonization of drone regulations between EU member states will lead to more efficient and scalable operations throughout Europe.
Once operational, Prime Air will increase the overall safety and efficiency of ground transport by allowing people to skip an extra car journey, reducing pressure on our road networks. As the rules continue to develop, we are optimistic they will remain aligned with EASA’s risk-based three-tiered plan. This plan divides regulatory guidance into open, specific, and certified categories of operation based upon the risk profile of each. We believe it's a very pragmatic and positive approach to introducing a new framework for drone operations that will serve as a model for regulation worldwide, not just for the benefit of EASA member states.
