Amazon has been dog-friendly since the company was founded. It all started with a husband and wife team in the early days of Amazon. They wanted to bring their corgi, Rufus, to work. When they did, Rufus became quite the important team member.
Employees used to lift him up and use his little paw to click the computer mouse when launching the very first, early pages of the Amazon.com website. Today, there is an entire Seattle office building named in Rufus' honor and his picture can be found all around Amazon's Seattle campus.
Employees are welcome to bring their dogs to the office every day. There are currently over 7,000 dogs registered to come to work at Amazon, spread out over 40 office buildings.
Before bringing a dog to work, an employee must have conversations with their manager as well as teammates in their immediate work area to ensure everyone is comfortable with the pup being present. After that, the Amazonian submits a short registration form for their dog and provides proof of vaccination.
Dogs who accompany their owners to work sit with them at their desks or in their area, either on a leash or short tether, or in a penned area. Employees with registered dogs have the choice to bring the dogs in or make other arrangements.
In case you're wondering, the three most popular dog breeds at Amazon are golden retrievers, Labrador retrievers, and Labradoodles, and the top three names are Lucy, Bella, Luna, Bailey, and Charlie.
